A robust, lightweight pistol caliber sub-machine gun with a futuristic appearance, the CZ SCORPION EVO 3 has been one of shooters’ favorites since its inception in 2009. Its popularity can also be traced to its frequent appearance in movies and video games. Notably being featured in the Tactical shooter Rainbow Six Siege as GROM Operator, Ela's primary weapon of choice.

Recently ASG released the new and improved SCORPION EVO 3 ATEK, a version of the EVO 3 equipped with the Advanced Tactical Ergonomics Kit along with a number of internal upgrades. Let’s take a closer look at the improvements the ATEK version brings to the EVO platform.

External Features

The first thing that came to my attention the moment I picked up the ATEK was the enlarged and extended mag release. The added paddle provides a much larger contact area and allows for a more MP5 style of reloading. The enlarged mag release is also much easier to activate with the trigger finger when compared to the original.

Right next to the mag release is where the new flared magwell from the ATEK kit sits. The larger opening allows for quick and smooth reloads even when under pressure, while the forward sweep angle allows the magwell to serve as a grip surface for a tighter, more compact posture. One thing to note is that there are two versions of the magwell, one for the midcap magazines and one for the bulkier high capacity magazines.

The EVO 3 ATEK also comes equipped with an updated M-LOK Handguard as well as an angled foregrip for improved attachment compatibility and control.

The M-LOK system of rail attachment is widely adopted in modern firearms, providing top of the world modularity while reducing weight, without sacrificing rigidity and durability. The smooth surface also makes for a more pleasant gripping experience.

The angled foregrip is a great option to improve one’s control of the EVO, however I find it a bit difficult to achieve a thumb-over-bore grip with the increased size. Luckily it can easily be replaced with any rail mounted foregrips or handstops of your choice.

Internal Upgrades

All new EVO 3 AEGs, including the standard A1s now come with improved internals.
As you take off the front handguard, you will no longer find the tamiya plugs that came with the EVOs of old, what you’ll find instead are deans connectors which are capable of more efficient power transfer when compared to tamiya plugs.

The gearbox is of the 2018 variant, featuring a more robust construction along with improvements to cylinder design. This time around, the ECU has also been upgraded to handle higher battery outputs, meaning it can handle 11.1v LiPos with confidence.

Conclusion

Overall the new generation of ASG SCORPION EVO 3s proves ASG’s determination in improving existing designs as the capability of the platform is further expanded with the introduction of the ATEK Kit and numerous internal revisions. Making the futuristic looking SMG a great addition to anyone’s airsoft arsenal.
